For most Americans, San Francisco, along with its buddy Los Angeles, represent Avant Guard ideals and opportunity.
To this today, it is hard to believe that the United States started out only as a small colony in Virginia (Earlier than Mayflower voyage). Ever since its colonial days, this ill-defined country has been rapidly expanding westward, by first buying large sums of land from the French in the Louisiana purchase and then taking fatherland of the native Americans. Similarly, Much of Arizona, California, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada came from the United States’ victorious conquest against Mexico.
Brutality aside, the westward expansion still demonstrates many traits that are worthy of admiration. The land of freedom and opportunity owes much of its meaning from those early settlers’ willingness to explore and exploit vast land of wilderness. And thus it comes at no surprise that California is one of the most economically robust states in the Union, and the United States, in this respect, totally deserves its success.
